Enrolling in an Online Game Art Program with NO Previous Experience
We interviewed recent graduate Jason Ferenczy on his experience in the 9-month online Game Art Program taught by industry professionals. Before Vertex School, Jason attended a 4-year college but had no 3D experience. In this article, Jason gives insight into his thoughts on traditional 4-year schools vs. the online Game Art Program. Enjoy!
Why did you choose to enroll at Vertex School?
I enrolled at Vertex to widen my abilities in how I create content. As a creative professional, I’m always looking for new skills to implement in my work. Enrolling in the Game Art Program at Vertex School was a no-brainer. Considering I knew nothing about 3D creation and art, it was a scary leap to take, but I couldn’t be happier that I did.

Jason’s Term II Project, Forgotten Faith
Regarding Jason’s term II project, he writes, “This piece is my first real-time environment made in Unreal Engine 5, and I couldn’t be more proud of my work. I gained invaluable knowledge from this experience. Thanks very much to my mentor Ben Merrick and the team behind the Game Art Program at Vertex School.”
Why do you recommend Vertex over traditional / 4-year schools?
As someone who went through the traditional college experience, I think there is value in what Vertex offers that you can’t get with the average 4-year program. The resource of having industry professionals leading the programs alone is an X-factor that separates Vertex apart from most traditional learning experiences. Not to mention, there is so much value in their focus on hiring triggers and creating work that gets you noticed in the industry of thousands of other artists.
How has your experience at Vertex School been?
I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The faculty and staff at Vertex treated me with respect. Additionally, my mentors throughout the 9 months guided me in creating work that I’m proud of. This program taught me to push my boundaries and seek new ways to solve problems, rather than just memorization/regurgitation and technical ability.
Do you recommend Vertex School?
I highly recommend Vertex School to any creative professional looking to enhance their abilities and learn new skills. This experience has opened up professional pathways that I wouldn’t have thought possible a year ago.
