We asked Vertex School alum, Shayne Martin, a few questions regarding his experience in our Game Art Program (Term I) AND our Game Development Program.

Why did you choose to enroll at Vertex School?

I chose to enroll at Vertex because it felt like all the universities and colleges were using old pipelines for 3D art and Game Development. Vertex School on the other hand has industry professional mentors who give seminars and teach classes. It is a fast-paced and material-dense place, not only do you get to learn industry-level pipelines and techniques, but you get it on a professional level from professionals. A lot of the fat is trimmed off and the important skills that you need to learn are focused on. To add to that, I didn’t have the time or the finances to attend a traditional school.

How has your experience at Vertex School been?

My experience at Vertex has been great. I started out in the Game Art Program but after finishing term 1 I realized that the Game Development Program would help polish my skills more because of my background with 3D over the last few years.  The Game Development Program was great. Prior to starting the program, I had been using Unreal Engine for several years in my free time so I had a good understanding of most of the tools and practices. The program helped me sharpen my understanding of how the tools work. It also gave me a strong motivational push to be able to finish my project, put it up online for people to play, as well as get feedback and plan my next steps for developing it.

Do you recommend Vertex School?

I recommend Vertex School to all aspiring game artists and/or game developers looking for a fast-paced and condensed program for learning industry-relevant skills. It’s great for people who aren’t interested in attending a college or university but who have the time and effort to not only put into their work but also to go beyond what is required and to push their work even further.

Final Words

I am sincerely thankful to Vertex School for granting me the opportunity not only to learn new techniques but also to refine my skills during my participation in their game art and game development programs. This transformative journey led to the development of a polished prop capstone and the successful release of a small game demo. I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Vertex School for providing me with this invaluable learning experience and a platform to showcase my abilities.
